Vietnam Visa Extension for Finnish Citizens: The 2026 Guide

January 24, 2026 Off By Mi Pandora

For Finnish travelers trading the Nordic winter for an extended stay in Da Nang, Phu Quoc, or Ho Chi Minh City, realizing you want to stay in Vietnam longer than your visa allows is a common scenario.

However, the immigration rules in 2026 have shifted significantly. This guide outlines the exact, legal pathways for Finnish citizens to extend their stay in Vietnam, debunking outdated information and providing actionable solutions.

1. The Reality of Visa Extensions in 2026

If you are reading outdated blogs from years past, you might think you can simply walk into an immigration office and pay a fee to extend your tourist visa. In 2026, this is no longer the case.

  • Tourist Visas & Exemptions: In-country extensions for the 45-day visa exemption or the 90-day tourist E-visa are suspended. You cannot extend these from within Vietnam.

  • The Solution: To legally “extend” your tourist stay, you must perform a Visa Run (also known as a Border Run). This means exiting Vietnam to a neighboring country and re-entering with a new visa or a new exemption stamp.

2. Option A: The “Visa Run” for the 45-Day Exemption

As a Finnish passport holder, you are entitled to a 45-day visa-free entry. If your 45 days are coming to an end but you want to stay longer:

  1. Exit Vietnam: Fly to a nearby hub like Bangkok (Thailand), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), or Singapore. Alternatively, take a bus to a land border like Moc Bai (Cambodia) or Lao Bao (Laos).

  2. Re-enter Vietnam: You can turn around and re-enter Vietnam on the same day.

  3. The Result: Upon re-entry, present your Finnish passport, and you will receive a brand-new 45-day visa exemption stamp.

Note: There is no longer a mandatory “waiting period” between exemption entries.

3. Option B: The “Visa Run” for a 90-Day E-Visa

If 45 days is not enough, you can “extend” your time by upgrading to a 90-Day E-Visa.

  1. Apply Online First: While you are still in Vietnam, apply for a 90-Day E-Visa through our portal. Ensure you select the correct exit and new entry ports.

  2. Wait for Approval: Processing takes 3–5 working days. Do not leave Vietnam until your new E-visa is approved and printed.

  3. Do the Border Run: Exit Vietnam via your chosen port, get your exit stamp, and immediately re-enter using your printed 90-Day E-visa.

💡 Tip for Expats: If you are staying in Ho Chi Minh City, the fastest and cheapest Visa Run is via bus to the Moc Bai Land Border (Cambodia). If you are in Da Nang, the Lao Bao Land Border (Laos) is the preferred route.

4. Who CAN Extend Their Visa In-Country?

While tourists must do a Visa Run, certain visa categories can still be extended directly at the Vietnam Immigration Department in Hanoi, Da Nang, or Ho Chi Minh City:

Visa Category Eligibility for In-Country Extension Requirements
Business (DN1/DN2) Yes. Up to 3 months or convert to TRC. Must be sponsored by the same Vietnamese company.
Work (LD1/LD2) Yes. Based on Work Permit duration. Valid Work Permit and company sponsorship.
Investor (DT1-DT4) Yes. Convert to Temporary Residence Card. Proof of capital contribution/investment.
Family (TT/VR) Yes. Up to 1 year. Proof of relationship to a Vietnamese citizen or expat with a TRC.

5. Overstaying: A Serious Warning

If you miscalculate your days and overstay your visa, do not attempt to hide or go to the airport without resolving it first. * Penalties: Overstaying incurs heavy daily fines, starting from 1,250,000 VND and increasing significantly. Severe overstays can lead to blacklisting and deportation.

  • What to do: If you have overstayed by just 1-2 days, contact a reputable immigration consultancy like us immediately to arrange an “Exit Visa” and minimize penalties.
